Musings Archive: May 2004:: BETRAY THE AGE :: Like all good rock stars and pop song writers, U2's Bono is a bit of a thief, building his band's cathedral-like songs on the ruins of the glorious pagans who came before him. U2 has found a way to fulfill--and redeem--the promise of the Clash, Patty Smith, even the Sex Pistols, all while making something genuinely new from the spoils they have plundered. It turns out that Bono's a thief when giving a speech, too, as evidenced by his pitch-perfect paraphrase of Irish poet Brendan Keneally in commending nothing short of revolution to the 6000 graduates of the the Ivy League bastion.... If you want to save this age, betray it... Expose its conceits, foibles and phony moral certitudes. Or, as those of us without the good grace of the poets might say: Look, the Emperor's willy! Amen and stuff.
